Recent Smartphone
Being very familiar with your iPhone or Android is key to this role. You'll use our app to manage jobs, communicate with customers, and process payments.
Strong & Physically Able
You must be physically able to fix a vehicle. You'll be lifting heavy objects, working in tight spaces, and performing repairs on-site.
Great Communication
You must be good with people and have strong communication skills. Professional customer service is essential to success on our platform.
What to Expect After You Apply
Joining TravelMechanic as a mobile mechanic is a real onboarding process, not a sign-up form. Below is exactly what happens after you submit your application, what we'll ask you for, and how soon you can realistically be earning your first paycheck on the platform.
We onboard mechanics in cohorts so you get a real walkthrough of the app, the booking flow, and how payouts work. The goal is for your first job to feel familiar, not like a guess.
Step 1 — Application review (1–2 business days)
Once you submit, our team reviews your experience, service area, and the kinds of work you're set up to do. If it's a fit, you'll receive an email within two business days with a link to schedule a 20-minute intro call.
Step 2 — Verification (3–5 business days)
We run a background check, verify your insurance coverage and driver's license, and call two professional references. We help you find affordable insurance options if your current coverage doesn't include commercial work.
Step 3 — Onboarding and first job (1–2 business days)
You get a guided walkthrough of the mechanic app, payouts, and booking flow with a real person — not a help-desk article. Once you're live, your first job typically arrives within 24–48 hours during business hours, depending on demand in your area.

How long does the application process take?
From submitting the application to getting your first paid job is typically 5–10 business days. The application itself takes about 10 minutes. After submitting, the longest steps are background checks, insurance verification, and reference calls — most are done in under a week.
What are the requirements to join?
You need at least 3 years of professional auto repair experience, a valid driver's license with a clean record, your own service vehicle and tools, commercial or general liability insurance (we can help you set this up), and the ability to pass a background check. ASE certification is preferred but not required.
What happens after I submit the application?
You'll receive a confirmation email within 5 minutes. Within 1–2 business days, our recruiter reaches out to schedule a 20-minute video call covering your experience and the marketplace. If we move forward, we send onboarding paperwork (background check authorization, insurance verification, direct deposit setup), then a guided platform walkthrough. After that you're live and can start quoting jobs.
Do I need to commit to specific hours each week?
No. There's no minimum hour requirement and no schedule we impose on you. You set your availability week by week and choose which job notifications you want to see. Many mechanics on the platform work 20–40 hours; some treat it as a side income on weekends.
